Medal of Honor
Colonel Bernard F. Fisher, Medal of Honor recipient, University of Utah Class of 1951, and Air Force ROTC Detachment 850 alumni, displayed great gallantry and selfless service to our nation as an aviator during the Vietnam conflict. On March 10, 1966, he led a two-ship element of propeller driven A1 Skyraiders to the A Shau Valley to support troops in contact. Six aircrafts were striking numerous emplacements in the valley when the A-1 piloted by Major D. W. Myers was hit and forced to crash-land on the airstrip of a Special Forces camp where he took cover behind an embankment on the edge of the strip. Since the closest helicopter was 30 minutes away and the enemy was only 200 yards from Myers, Fisher quickly decided to land his aircraft on the strip and pick up his comrade. Under the cover provided by the other A-1s, he landed in the valley, taxied to Myer’s position, and loaded the downed airman into the empty seat. Dodging shell holes and debris on the steel-planked runway, Fisher took off safely despite many hits on his aircraft by small-arms fire.
Due to his exhibition of bravery, selflessness, and excellence, Colonel Fisher was awarded the Medal of Honor on Jan. 19, 1967. He passed away on Aug. 16, 2014, but his legacy lives on in the young men and women of the University of Utah’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 850.
